Clermont is an agricultural town in Queensland, Australia. It is 274 km south-west of Mackay.


Clermont was established after the discovery of gold in the area. It is named after Clermont, France.

Clermont is a charming and substantial town on the gentle slopes above Sandy Creek and Hoods Lagoon.
Like so many of the townsites in the Central Highlands, Clermont's first European visitor was Ludwig Leichhardt who, in 1845, travelled through the area to the west of the town sighting the beautiful mountaintops of the Peak Range and naming them after members of his expedition.
Clermont was gazetted in 1864 and named after Clermont-Ferrand in France, the home of Oscar de Satge who at the time was the owner of Wolfang Downs.
Wrong Place - Wrong Time - The Centenary of Federation (405 words)
Clermont, 370 kilometres north west of Rockhampton was born in the Peak Downs gold rush of the early 1860's.
Two great floods in 1870 and 1883, had proved that Clermont was in the wrong place and many had suggested that the town should shift, but nothing came of it and so by the beginning of the 20th Century Clermont was a thriving prosperous town of over a thousand souls.
Clermont had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but in its darkest hour those famous frontier qualities of self reliance and mateship came to the rescue and helped rebuild Clermont.
