Cleveland is a town located in Russell County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 148.


Geography

Cleveland is located at 36°56'37" North, 82°9'8" West (36.943674, -82.152334)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 km˛ (0.1 mi˛). 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 14.29% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 148 people, 81 households, and 43 families residing in the town. The population density is 476.2/km˛ (1,251.7/mi˛). There are 113 housing units at an average density of 363.6/km˛ (955.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.97% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 81 households out of which 11.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.7% are non-families. 42.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.83 and the average family size is 2.45.


In the town the population is spread out with 8.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 33.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 55 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $11,346, and the median income for a family is $14,688. Males have a median income of $35,833 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,263. 41.8% of the population and 36.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 61.5% of those under the age of 18 and 33.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

CLEVELAND was once again called upon to perform outside her normal realm of operations while participating in recovery and salvage efforts of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 in February of 2000, receiving the Coast Guard Commendation Ribbon with Operational Distinguishing Device.
