Clifford is a community in the town of Minto in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. Although Clifford is a village, it was amalgamated with Palmerston and Harriston to create Minto. The village of Clifford was founded around 1854 and it was first called Mintoville, then later Clifford after a area nearby to the home of Francis Brown of Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England. At one time of the population of Clifford was more than 900 people when it was thought they would obtain a main railway line. This did not happen. Clifford is home to Wightman Telecom. The Wightman family has owned and operated a communication system in Clifford since 1908 starting with a telephone system which operated out of kitchen in Howick Township. Today, Blair and Paul Wightman operate the business which consist of telephone, construction, internet, security systems. Next year Wightman will celebrate 100 years.
