He was born in Clarion, Ohio and he was orphaned at the age of seven. He was raised by an uncle who held degrees in both medicine and dentistry. He was given the nickname "Little Doc" to distinguish him from his uncle. Rogers served in the military and then purchased a homestead in Campbell County.
