Truesdell was born in Los Angeles, California. From 1961 until his retirement in 1989 he was professor of rational mechanics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore[1][2]. He was the advisor of Walter Noll who contributed to foundational rational mechanics. The aim of rational mechanics is to construct a full mathematic model for treating (continuous) mechanical phenomena[3]. Truesdell was the founder and editor-in-chief of the journals Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and Archive for the History of Exact Sciences, which were unusual in several ways. Following Truesdell's criticisms of awkward style in scientific writing (to be found on "A Comment on Scientific Writing" see ref. 1), the journal accepted papers in English, French, German, or Latin. The Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876, is a private institution of higher learning located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. ... Clifford Truesdell - Selected Quotations (911 words)
Pedantry and sectarianism aside, the aim of theoretical physics is to construct mathematical models such as to enable us, from the use of knowledge gathered in a few observations, to predict by logical processes the outcomes in many other circumstances.
It is as ridiculous to deride continuum physics because it is not obtained from nuclear physics as it would be to reproach it with lack of foundation in the Bible.
The task of the theorist is to bring order into the chaos of the phenomena of nature, to invent a language by which a class of these phenomena can be described efficiently and simply.
