Clint Benedict (September 25, 1894 in Ottawa, Ontario - November 12, 1976) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Maroons in the National Hockey League. He was one of the first great goalies in hockey, along with Georges Vezina. Some 30 years before Jacques Plante popularized it, Clint was the first goalie to wear a mask. It was crude and made of leather, but because of low visibility, he stopped wearing it. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965. Benedict once stated, "My fingers were as badly hurt as my face or legs." Those who have had the pleasure of meeting Clint Benedict and shaking hands with him surely noticed his disfigured fingers and knuckles.
Benedict played hurt more often than not and it is reported that during one contest, the goaltender minded the net without the use of one of his legs.
Benedict led the Bulldogs to the championship at the age of thirty-nine while angry and bitter at the way his career was coming to a close.
