Clinton is a city located in Vermillion County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,126.


The city was named after DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York, 1817-1823.


Geography

Clinton is located at 39°39'36" North, 87°24'21" West (39.659903, -87.405924)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,126 people, 2,124 households, and 1,319 families residing in the city. The population density is 883.6/km² (2,284.5/mi²). There are 2,379 housing units at an average density of 410.1/km² (1,060.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.15% White, 0.35% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,124 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $29,330, and the median income for a family is $36,692. Males have a median income of $28,294 versus $22,927 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,601. 12.5% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 20.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
