Simpósio de Biologia Marinha - CEBIMar/USP (744 words)
Traditionally, Oligochaeta and Hirudinea were combined into Clitellata which was considered as a sister group to Polychaeta; both Clitellata and Polychaeta constituted the phylum Annelida, while Echiura and Pogonophora were treated as separate phyla.
Thus the posterior relocation of the brain, which is inferred as having occurred in the phylogeny of the Clitellata, was demonstrated.
Consequently, position of the supraoesophageal ganglion (brain) in the Clitellata, far behind the prostomium, was regarded as a secondary structural adaptation to a life spent burrowing through relatively firm terrestrial substrates.
