Closer is a 1980 album by Joy Division. It was the band's second and final album, after Unknown Pleasures. It is considered an important album in the post-punk movement. The album was scheduled to be released on May 8, 1980, but ended up arriving in stores in July, shortly after lead singer Ian Curtis' suicide. Closer, produced by Martin Hannett, has a sound which is both lusher and more sombre than Unknown Pleasures, with more use of synthesizers and studio effects. Many of its songs have a despairing, funereal feel, and its cover art appears to reflect this. Joy Division in 1980 was a band at the top of its game, so driven by creativity and new ideas that they released back to back classic albums in the span of less than a year.
Joy Division is a record store geek's dream come true, and anybody with too much time on their hands who really knows their shit about music will have heard this.
Joy Division combined the desolate electronics and mechanics of the beginning of 80's new wave and industrial music with the minimalism and deep emotional scars and desperation of late period punk.
