Encyclopedia > Cloud (music)

This article is about the musical concept of clouds. For clouds in meteorology, see Cloud.

In music a cloud is a moment characterized by its texture, rhythmic density, and ambiguity of rhythmic foreground and background or rhythmic hierarchy. Examples are found in much music by Iannis Xenakis, in the "clouds" of Gyorgy Ligeti's Clocks and Clouds (1972-3), and in La Monte Young's The Well Tuned Piano.

Clouds may include ambiguity of rhythmic foreground and background or rhythmic hierarchy.
Curtis Roads (ibid) suggests a taxonomy of cloud morphology based on atmospheric clouds: cumulus, stratocumulus, stratus, nimbostratus, and cirrus; as well as nebulae: dark or glowing, amorphus or ring-shaped, and constantly evolving.
