Cloudland is Pere Ubu's seventh album. As indicated by the presence of Stephen Hague in the producer's chair, this album is among the most straightforwardly pop efforts in the Ubu canon. The album is rife with glossy surfaces and bubbly synth pads, but the poetic vision of David Thomas roots the album firmly within the Ubu tradition. The track "Love Love Love", originally titled "Can't Believe It", dates from the band's Hearpen singles days (featuring a co-writing credit for Peter Laughner), but has been transformed from a Velvet Underground-inspired chug to an almost bizarrely chipper synth-pop exercise. The track "Waiting for Mary", the video for which achieved some MTV exposure, netted Pere Ubu their only Billboard chart success to date, reaching #6 on the Modern Rock chart.
