Cloudland Canyon State Park is a 3,485 acre (14.10 km2) Georgia state park located near Trenton and Cooper Heights on the western edge of Lookout Mountain. The park offers rugged geology and beautiful vistas to visitors, as it straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek, where the elevation differs from 1,980 to 800 feet (604 to 244 m). The most spectacular views are found in the picnic area parking lot, though several additional views can be found along the rim trail. At the bottom of the gorge are located two waterfalls cascading overs layers of sandstone and shale into small pools below. Cloudland Canyon State Park is located on Lookout Mountain in the Cumberland Plateau region of Georgia.
Cloudland Canyon is also an excellent place to study superposition as you can identify the order of events that took place to create the canyon (deposition of sediment, deformation, and cutting) and a walk to the canyon floor is a descent through millions of years.
The exposed rocks of Cloudland Canyon represent the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Periods and are grouped together as Carboniferous.
