History
Founded on August 2, 2004, as Major League Soccer's then-eleventh team, Los Angeles-based Club Deportivo Chivas USA has achieved remarkable success in just three seasons in MLS. In 2007, the Mexican-owned club finished first in the Western Conference, qualifying for the playoffs for the second year in a row to the delight of its passionate supporters. Chivas USA kicked off its inaugural season in Major League Soccer at The Home Depot Center with a 2-0 loss to then MLS Cup Champions D.C. United on April 2, 2005, under the guidance of Chivas USA’s first head coach Thomas Rongen. After a 1–8–1 start (their sole win coming against fellow expansion club Real Salt Lake), Thomas Rongen was named Chivas USA's sporting director and assistant coach Javier 'Zully' Ledesma becomes the club's interim head coach. On June 3, 2005, Hans Westerhof was named Chivas USA's second head coach. After a disappointing season, Westerhof did not return to coach the team in 2006. On Nov. 23, 2005, Bob Bradley, the winningest manager in Major League Soccer history, became Chivas USA’s third head coach, replacing Hans Westerhof. Under Bradley, the 2006 season saw a major turnaround for Chivas USA. The team finished the 2006 season with a 10-9-13 record and earned a spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Bradley was named MLS Coach of the Year, becoming the first two-time winner of the award and Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein was named 2006 Gatorade Rookie of the Year. After the season ended, Coach Bradley was named interim head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team and head coach of the U.S. Men's Olympic Team by the U.S. Soccer Federation, and was replaced by Chivas USA’s fourth Head Coach Predrag Radosavljevic a.k.a. Preki. The team’s third season, under Coach Preki, was the most successful to date. Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan was named MLS’s Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2007 season. On Nov. 7, 2007, Chivas USA Head Coach Preki was named MLS Coach of the Year for 2007 after the first-year manager led the Red-and-White to a 15-7-8 record and first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. In January 2008, Preki signed a multi-year contract with Chivas USA securing his position as head coach for the upcoming 2008 season.
100-Hour Game Aug. 13, 2006: Chivas USA's '100-Hour Soccer Game', the longest on record in the United States, concluded in the city of Bell Gardens, with Chivas defeating the Rest of the World 437-429 after 6,000 minutes (100 hours) of continuous play. The game, held in celebration of Club Deportivo Guadalajara's 100th anniversary, attracted over 2,000 participants and more than 20,000 fans.
Championship Chivas finished the 2007 MLS season atop of the Western Conference earning the title of MLS Western Conference Champions. However, they lost in the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup 2007 playoffs to the Kansas City Wizards, who were placed in the Western #4 seed under new MLS Cup playoff seeding rules despite being in the Eastern Conference. 5 Core Values As the only Mexican-owned team in major professional sports in the United States, Chivas USA brings a boldly different approach to the American sports landscape, centered on five core values: • Passion: Chivas USA, its players, employees and fans, embody the true passion of soccer, the world’s greatest sport. • Chivas Heritage: Chivas USA proudly celebrates its special ties to sister team Club Deportivo Guadalajara, Mexico's most popular soccer club. • Competitiveness: Chivas USA strives to win championships and succeed in all aspects of its business. • Inspiration: Chivas USA provides opportunities to young people on and off the playing field, helping them grow into the soccer stars and leaders of tomorrow. • Community: Chivas USA stands at the heart of the community, building alliances through soccer while reaching out to those in need.
Chivas USA in the community Chivas USA is committed to nurturing the best soccer talent in Southern California through its groundbreaking youth development program. Under the guidance of Director of Soccer Dennis te Kloese, Chivas USA is growing its stars of the future at the $10 million Bell Gardens Sports Center in the nearby city of Bell Gardens (Los Angeles County, California), where the region's top players participate in Chivas USA's Under-18, -16 and -15 Youth Teams free of cost. Chivas USA's efforts have already borne fruit, as in the past three seasons, several players have graduated from the club's youth ranks to its 28-man roster. In addition, Chivas USA offers soccer instruction, for an annual fee, to players 5 to 15 years old at the Chivas USA Soccer Academies in Bell Gardens and San Bernardino, which are run by a staff of professional coaches using the same training methods as Chivas USA's first team and sister team Club Deportivo Guadalajara. Registration for the Academy is held on an annual basis and the club's youth teams hold monthly tryouts in search of the best talent. The team also brings soccer to the community through unique programs, such as 'Sueño MLS', a unique nationwide player search - organized for the first time in conjunction with Major League Soccer in February 2007 - in which several players, including eventual winner Jorge Flores of Anaheim, California, earned spots on Chivas USA's U-19 and U-17 teams. Flores ended the 2007 season on the senior roster of Chivas USA, and made his MLS debut on September 9, 2007, against the New York Red Bulls. Chivas USA's commitment to the community is seen through the team's numerous community programs – including fundraisers, blood drives, ticket donations, hospital visits and numerous grassroots appearances – spearheaded by the Fundación Chivas de Corazón USA, the team's nonprofit foundation. In 2008, Chivas USA also started a series of soccer clinics throughout Los Angeles County in a program entitled ‘Kick-it at the Park LA with Chivas USA.’ Throughout 2008, Chivas will offer clinics for up to 600 community youth ages 5-15 at 40 different sites. A $5 fee per individual per clinic entitled each participant to 90 minutes of instruction by Chivas USA coaches, a soccer ball, a Chivas USA clinic T-shirt, one voucher for a free Chivas USA game ticket, and a certificate of completion.
Fan Clubs Legión 1908- is the team’s largest fan club and their Los Angeles chapter boasts over 1,000 members. Union Ultras- is a supporter’s group that exclusively supports Chivas USA. Chivas supporters create a uniquely vibrant, family-friendly soccer atmosphere wherever the team plays.
Team Jersey Chivas USA's uniform bears the same vertical red-and-white stripes of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, worn with blue shorts and blue socks.
Sponsor On May 16, 2007, Comex, Mexico’s leading paint company, became Chivas USA’s presenting sponsor. Its logo also appears the front of Chivas USA jerseys and training jerseys
Television and radio FSN WEST and FSN PRIME TICKET have coverage of Chivas USA for the 2008 season. Delivering the most Chivas games on television, the schedule includes 18 regular season games and up to two post-season contests. Christian Miles is the play-by-play announcer, with Bernardo Osuna as analyst and sideline reporter Christine Nubla. The official Spanish-language broadcast partner is W Radio 690 AM and will broadcast all 30 of Chivas USA’s regular-season games during the 2008 season.
