While named after a small and unsuccessful local coal mine that was founded in 1883, this Vancouver Island village's most successful industry was whaling. It was the last whaling station in North America when it closed in 1967. Then, in the 1970s, a copper mine was established which ran until 1996. 1883 (MDCCCLXXXIII) was a common year starting on Monday (see link for calendar). ...
