History

In the 1800s, Coal Valley originated as a small villiage. The purpose of the town was to mine coal, hence the name Coal Valley. Also, they mined here because the ground is abundant with coal. Eventually when coal mining halted, Coal Valley became what it is known today. It is a rural villiage that is mostly residential. It houses families that work in or out of the greater Quad Cities Area. The Quad Cities are four cities which straddle the Mississippi River in the midwestern United States. ...

Considering the fact that the population of the village was slightly less than 200, and the whole township of Coal Valley, about 800 at the time, a significant number of area families still depended on mining to provide their livelihoods.
Coal Valley's last mine, the Gem, owned by the Mielke family, still operated into the early 1950s, but by then the demand for coal had dropped off due to the use of other cleaner, more easily transported fuels such as natural gas.
Although the coal-mining era ending in the mid-20th century, Coal Valley was to enjoy a renewed life, due to the post-war housing boom.
