In general, the Distinguished Service Medal is awarded only to those officers in principal commands at sea or in the field whose service contributes materially to the success of a major command or project.
The award of the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal follows the same guidelines as for the Army Distinguished Service Medal in that the conditions for which the award is made must involve exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility.
However, the adoption of the Coast Guard Distinguished Service medal, with its portrait of the "Massachusetts" under full sail on the obverse of the planchet, gave members of the Coast Guard a distinctive award to recognize the exceptionally meritorious service of its members.
