The coat of arms was designed after the break up of former Socialist federative republic of Yugoslavia, to symbolise the new union of just Serbia and Montenegro. Its design thus features the traditional heraldical elements connected historicaly with both countries. White doble-headed eagle on red shield was a syimbol present in Serbian countries since the early medieval times. It is probably borrowed from Byzantine empire. The four fields on the chest of the eagle bare the symbols of Serbia, cross with firesteels and a golden lion as a symbol of Montenegro.
