Only four years after it was founded, Cobreloa reached the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1981, losing in a third match to Brazil's Flamengo. Cobreloa also reached the Copa Libertadores final the following year, losing then to Peñarol of Uruguay. The club also made a Copa Libertadores semifinal appearance in 1987.
