Codington County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 25,897. Its county seat is Watertown6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,857 km˛ (717 mi˛). 1,781 km˛ (688 mi˛) of it is land and 76 km˛ (29 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.10% water.

The county is divided into seventeen townships: Dexter, Eden, Elmira, Fuller, Germantown, Graceland, Henry, Kampeska, Kranzburg, Lake, Leola, Pelican, Phipps, Rauville, Richland, Sheridan, Waverly.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,897 people, 10,357 households, and 6,877 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km˛ (38/mi˛). There are 11,324 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.74% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,357 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.60% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.50 males.
