Corneliu Zelea Codreanu (born Corneliu Zelinski Codreanu, 13 September 1899 - 30 November 1938) was the charismatic leader of the Romanian Nationalistic movement in the interwar period, known as The Legion of Saint Michael the Archangel or The Iron Guard (also known as the Garda de Fier, or Legionaires). The Legionnaires traditionally called Codreanu "The Captain", and he held absolute authority over the organization until his death. The originality of the Romanian nationalist movement is granted to the leader of the Iron Guard. Codreanu was a very religious person and he tried to build a Christian organization. Thus, the Orthodox Christianity was the theoretic cornerstone of this movement until Codreanu died. Nowadays Codreanu is remembered as a spiritual leader more than a political one. The attachment to Orthodox Christianity, respect for tradition and the Populist demands claimed by the legionnaires attracted a lot of sympathy. Peasants as well as students and young intellectuals formed the heart of the organization. Codreanu was its father and soul, and after he was assassinated by the King Carol II on November 30, 1938, the Iron Guard underwent a very difficult period, including a great deal of infighting and purges, before joining the government in 1940 under the leadership of Horia Sima.
