History

Barent Pieteres Koijemans first arrived in 1639 from Holland. He became an apprentice at a mill owned by the Van Rensselaers [1]. After changing his name to Barent Peterse Coeymans to resolve confusion among his inbred family, he purchased the land and obtained a patent in 1673 [2]. According to the official site, this is when the town was formed.
