Like many of the songs on One Hot Minute, "Coffee Shop"'s lyrics are cryptic and often bizarre. The track is also notable for appearing on the album between two much more subdued and softer songs, "My Friends" (an acoustic ballad) and "Pea", which features only Flea playing an acoustic bass and singing on his own. This creates a significant, unpredictable contrast, especially when considering how the extreme loudness of the song abrubtly kicks in and halts with very little warning.
