Coldwater is a city located in central Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,697. It is the county seat of Branch County6.


The city is located at the center of Coldwater Township, though it is politically independent.


Interstate 69 and U.S. Highway 12 intersect just east of the city. Michigan State Highway 86 has its eastern terminus at a junction with US 12 about two miles west of the city.


Coldwater is at latitude 41° 56' 25" north and longitude 85° 00' 02" west. The ZIP code is 49036 and the FIPS place code is 17020. The elevation is 969 feet above sea level.


Geography

Coldwater River flows north through the township, forming a series of lakes just west and north of the city.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.6 km˛ (8.4 mi˛). 21.1 km˛ (8.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.63% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,697 people, 4,058 households, and 2,520 families residing in the city. The population density is 603.0/km˛ (1,562.5/mi˛). There are 4,370 housing units at an average density of 207.5/km˛ (537.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 85.35% White, 8.42% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.52% from other races, and 3.01% from two or more races. 4.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,058 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,913, and the median income for a family is $41,107. Males have a median income of $31,577 versus $22,088 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,833. 9.6% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.6% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
