Coldwater is a municipal community with a population of 1,195 (1997), located on Ontario provincial highway 12 between Orillia and Midland, on the Coldwater River in Medonte Twp.,Simcoe Co.. Chief John Aisance and his band of Chippewa Indians settled at what is now Coldwater in 1830, calling the place Gissinausebing, which means "cold water." Orillia (2001 population 29,121) is a city on in south-central Ontario, Canada on Lake Couchiching, where it flows from Lake Simcoe, in Simcoe County towards Georgian Bay (Lake Huron). ... Midland (population 16,000) is a town located on Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. ... A grist mill was built on the sight in 1833, and a post office was established in 1835 with the name Coldwater. The Indians owned the mill until 1849.

The Coldwater River in Simcoe County originates in the Oro moraine west of Lake Simcoe and flows west to empty into Matchedash Bay on Georgian Bay.
The river is believed to have been named from its Ojibwa name "gisinaa nibiish", which means "cold pool of water".
The Coldwater River in the Algoma District empties into northeastern Lake Superior in Lake Superior Provincial Park.
