History and culture

Colebrook was founded in 1770. It is still very natural and preserved.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.2 km² (41.0 mi²). 106.2 km² (41.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,321 people, 1,035 households, and 607 families residing in the town. The population density is 21.9/km² (56.6/mi²). There are 1,312 housing units at an average density of 12.4/km² (32.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.49% White, 0.00% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,035 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.3% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.76.


In the town the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $32,244, and the median income for a family is $42,260. Males have a median income of $31,833 versus $20,383 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,390. 12.0% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.5% of those under the age of 18 and 20.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
