Colfax County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 10,441. Its county seat is Schuyler6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,084 km˛ (419 mi˛). 1,070 km˛ (413 mi˛) of it is land and 14 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.30% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,441 people, 3,682 households, and 2,592 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km˛ (25/mi˛). There are 4,088 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 81.73% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 15.94% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 26.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,682 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 18.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 106.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.70 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,849, and the median income for a family is $40,936. Males have a median income of $25,656 versus $20,485 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,148. 10.80% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 7.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Nebraska National Register Sites in Colfax County (728 words)
Built in 1921-22, the Colfax County Courthouse is a Second Renaissance Revival style building, which is an important landmark to the city of Schuyler and the county.
John Janecek emigrated to the United States from Bohemia in 1870 and settled in Colfax County in 1873.
He was best known in Schuyler as the builder and proprietor of the Janecek Opera House, the hub of social activity in the county around the turn of the century.
