Calderwood started his career in the lower reaches of the English Divisions. He played for Mansfield Town[1] and Swindon Town helping Swindon to a 4-3 playoff win over Leicester in 1993 which saw them promoted to the Premiership[citation needed]. He moved on to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer of 1993 where he had five successful years and played with a succession of defenders including Gary Mabbutt and Ramon Vega. Upon retirement as a player, Colin became reserve team manager at Tottenham before becoming manager of Northampton Town on 9th October 2003[4]. Calderwood took Northampton to promotion in 2006 finishing second in League Two and was at the helm when they set a new club record for the number of clean sheets held by the club (25). Calderwood led Forest to a 7 point cushion at the top of the league in late November 2006, and looked favourites for promotion, yet Forest surrendered the lead and finished the campaign in 4th place, 11 points behind leaders Scunthorpe, despite losing just one game of the last ten. In the 2007-08 campaign, Calderwood's side started without winning in any of their first six competitive games of the season, despite signing five players in the summer. Forest went on a run of form, losing just once in fifteen games. This led to Calderwood winning the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Trophy after four wins in five games, but the following month decided to sell it on eBay to raise fundss to buy presents for the local hospitals in Nottingham. Forest had an inconsistent Christmas period, but briefly went up to second in the league in January 2008. After this there was a further spell of inconsistent results, particularly away from home and Forest dropped a couple of places into the promotion play-off zone. However, a stunning late run of form saw them win six out of their last seven games, which saw Nottingham Forest finish in second-place, and therefore promoted to the Championship. They did this by ironically beating the team who beat them in the play-offs last year, as they dramatically won 3-2 against Yeovil coupled with Cheltenham Town's 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers to seal promotion, which was their first triumph after ten years of hurt. Colin was appointed as the fourth Cobblers manager of 2003 on 9 October 2003 with John Deehan as "Director of Football".
Towards the end of the 1998/9 season, Colin moved to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa for around one year, before a brief spell at Nottingham Forest during which he was loaned to Notts County.
Colin told Cobblers fans that he wanted his side to play with no fear, and the well turned out Scot will be hoping to become the latest in a long line of excellent managers to come from north of the border.
