The Coliseo de Puerto Rico is the biggest arena in the island of Puerto Rico and can accommodate up to twenty-thousand (20 000) persons. José Miguel Agrelot opened its doors to the public in September 2004. Even though its history is full of political controversies, the Coliseo gave the population of Puerto Rico the oppotunity to experience special events that were almost impossible in the smaller arenas of the island.
The Colisseum was a project started during the administration of Gov. Pedro Rossello, and finished in 2004 by Gov. Sila Maria Calderon. The construction took millions of dollars, endless years, and the facility was even moved from its original location. The Coliseo finally was inaugurated in September 2004.
The name for the structure was a controversy by itself. At the beginning it was just going to be called Coliseo de Puerto Rico, but then some local senators came up with the idea of giving it a name of a local celebrity. Some of the names mentioned were that of singer Ricky Martin, boxer Felix Trinidad and actor Raul Julia. But it was the name of deceased comedian Jose Miguel Agrelot that made the final cut, soon after his death.
Other controversy came in the name of ticket distributors. A exclusive contract was given to Banco Popular's TicketPop, almost ignoring the bid by competitor TicketCenter. The problem almost made it to trial, as both parts argue over who should sell tickets for events.
De esta manera, surge su primer personaje conocido como Torito Fuertes, figura principal del programa El Colegio de la AlegrÃa, transmitido en aquel momento por WIAC.
