Kölner Rosenmontagszug (2004)

The Cologne carnival is a carnival that takes place in Cologne every year starting at 11:11 on November 11 culminating in a week-long street festival leading up to Ash Wednesday. The highlight of the carnival is the Rosenmontag which takes place on the Monday. The typical cry during the festival is "Kölle Alaaf!", a Kölsch phrase which can be roughly translated as "Cologne over all!". LOOKING AHEAD TO CARNIVAL; Cologne - New York Times (709 words)
Well, the carnival is when Cologne goes berserk in a fifth season of boisterous reveling, tomfoolery, masquerading, drinking and dancing in the streets that belies everything you may have heard about Germanic stodginess and seriousness.
It is also the longest carnival season anywhere, beginning sharply at 11:11 A.M. on the 11th day of the 11th month each year, accelerating crazily with an average of 500 costume balls and merrymaking assemblies after New Year's, and erupting in a burst of outdoor festivities on the six days before Ash Wednesday.
The first written references to carnival in Cologne date from the 12th century, and many of the forms that the festival takes today can be traced to activities in the Middle Ages.
Karneval (2788 words)
Carnival is celebrated in many parts of the world.
Carnival parades are organiced even in some predominantly Protestant cities, such as Frankfurt, on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.
Common to all types of Carnival customs, although carried out in various ways and versions, are the "fools' trials." Community members, who have violated unwritten norms of behavior, are reprimanded in word or deed.
