Colonie is a village located in Albany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 7,916.

The Village of Colonie was incorporated in 1921. The village is within the Town of Colonie.

Geography

Colonie is located at 42°43'15" North, 73°50'2" West (42.720877, -73.834146)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²). 8.5 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.30% is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 7,916 people, 3,174 households, and 2,253 families residing in the village. The population density is 926.2/km² (2,396.7/mi²). There are 3,264 housing units at an average density of 381.9/km² (988.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.68% White, 3.54% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 3.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,174 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the village the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $54,597, and the median income for a family is $63,822. Males have a median income of $38,515 versus $30,929 for females. The per capita income for the village is $23,596. 3.9% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
