A colour is a name for certain kinds of flags.

  • On land, it usually refers to regimental colours, but the term is also used outside military situations - for example, Scout and Girl Guide flags are known as colours.
  • At sea, the term "flying the colours" refers to a warship sailing on high seas and flying its national ensign, thereby making its presence (and therefore its nation's military influence) known to other naval powers.

A small triangular flag designed to be hung vertically usually charged with the emblem and livery colours of a sporting club (see also ‘livery colours’, ’pennant 2’ and ‘souvenir flags’).
Please note that the self-adopted flags of various non-governmental or semi-governmental organizations, whilst often being given the reverence and treatment normally shown to an officially awarded colour, are strictly speaking parade flags and not colours.
The first type of colour is generally (but not invariably) based on the design of the national flag, and in a few cases (such as in the British and Canadian regiments of foot guards) it is the regimental colour that derives from the design of the national flag.

It should be noted also however, that the practice of tying a parade flag or military colour to its staff, or affixing it with metal rings, is not entirely obsolete (see also ‘ties’).
An oval-shaped wood or plastic cross-piece attached to a hoist-line sewn into the heading of a flag, that fastens to a becket or eyesplice at the upper end of the halyard for hoisting the flag on a mast or pole (see also ‘becket’, ‘halyard’, ‘heading’, ‘hoistline’ plus ‘running eye and toggle’).
Please note that a tribal flag may also be a political flag under certain circumstances, and that some tribal flags may be considered as national flags dependent upon the legal status and/or ambitions of the tribal group concerned.
