A Colubrid (from Latin coluber, snake) is a snake that is a member of the Colubridae family. It is a broad classification of snakes that includes well over half of all snake species on earth. A colubrid's body is almost completely covered in scales. While most colubrids are non-venomous (or have venom that isn't known to be harmful to humans) and are normally harmless, a few groups, such as genus Boiga, Coluber and Rhabdophis, can produce medically significant bites. In addition, the Boomslang and African Twig Snake have both caused human fatalities. The venom-injecting fangs associated with venomous colubrids are almost always in the back of the mouth, compared to vipers and elapids. "colubrid" venom research (438 words)
However this family is not a natural group and actually seven or more families that are in some cases far far more closely related to elapids than they are to other 'colubrids'.
However, this is an artificial term that is evolutionarily misleading, it is in fact the same venom gland as the one found in cobras and rattlesnakes.
Like just about every other 'colubrid' they have a venom gland and their venom is rich in neurotoxic 3FTx.
Pigtails, Curls and Whorls (2022 words)
The colubrid snakes are a widespread and common group of serpents found around the world.
A few of the colubrids are venomous, but all of the constricting colubrids are completely harmless.
When scared, most constricting colubrids will vibrate their tail, an act that can make them sound like a rattlesnake if the tail is in dry leaves or grass or up against hard rocks, but the bull, pine and gopher snakes take this mimicry to a whole new level.
