Encyclopedia > Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School
Columbia Grammar and Preperatory School ("Columbia Prep," "CGPS") is the oldest non-sectarian private school in the United States, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in New York City, New York. It was founded in 1764 by Columbia University in order to properly prepare incoming freshmen in the fields of English, Greek, and Latin grammar. By 1865, the school had grown substantially and was no longer necessary to the university, thus disassociating itself from the university.
In contrast with the British usage of the term "Preparatory School" (preparation for secondary school), the Grammar School is the primary half and the Preparatory School is the secondary half.

The school was originally known as The GrammarSchool of King's College (relating to the former name of Columbia University), changing its name concurrently with the university during the American Revolution to ColumbiaGrammarSchool, adding the word preparatory in 1978.
As you might know, we are one of the oldest institutions in America, with a long and notable tradition of excellence as a college preparatoryschool.
At the same time, we are a very modern school, with beautiful and spacious new buildings, and a curriculum which is comprehensive and appropriate to the needs of children in the 21st century.
It is important to note that we have one of the lowest student/faculty ratios of any school in New York City, less than 7 to 1, creating an atmosphere of small classes and personal attention to each child's needs.
