While one might get the idea that this is just another day-in-the-life story, it transcends this stereotype into a nightmarish, grueling film that many who have seen it claim as both extremely depressing and disturbing. According to Film Threat's Christopher Curry; "“Combat Shock” is the antitheses of movies like “Platoon,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Full Metal Jacket.” Rather than lionizing the heroism of the Vietnam vet it asks the viewer to empathize with not just the physically wounded but the mentally wounded as well. The mentally wounded soldier that has had his common sensibilities dismantled by a power-mad governmental body. The very government that sees the destruction of an enemy as a courageous act but then has little or no use for the “hero” once he’s returned home broken and disillusioned." Shockcinemamagazine.com had the following to say about it; "One of the ugliest, nastiest, most depressing movies of the decade." Also from Shockcinemamagazine.com; "The tone alternates between hallucinatory psychosis and a reality so grim that you'll wanna open your own wrists." TVGuide.com calls it "An intsenely downbeat film". Also, the book "VideoHound's Cult Flicks and Trash Pics" has to say; "A relentlessly bleak picture, with occasional repellent gross-outs and depressingly ugly urban rot. You won't find a more depressing film outside an art-house cinema." Trailer Narration: The following is stated by the narrator in the commercial for "COMBAT SHOCK". "THE FIGHTING. THE KILLING. THE MAIMING. THE AGENT ORANGE AND NAPALM. THE TORTURE CAGES. THEY WERE THE EASY PART OF "COMBAT SHOCK!" MEET FRANKIE DUNLAN, DECORATED WAR HERO, EX-PRIONSER OF WAR. BUT WHEN HE RETURNED HOME, NOTHING COULD PREPARE HIM FOR THE NIGHTMARE THAT WOULD FOLLOW "COMBAT SHOCK"! HE FOUND SOCIETY HAD TURNED AGAINST HIM. HIS JOB WAS GONE. THE CHEMICAL WARFARE THAT HAD POISONED VIETNAM WAS NOW POISONING HIS FAMILY. HIS CHILDHOOD FRIEND HAD BECOME A DESPERATE JUNKIE AND THE SWEET LITTLE GIRL NEXT DOOR WAS BEING FORCED TO SELL HER BODY IN THE GUTTER. "COMBAT SHOCK"! FRANKIE TRIED TO STAND UP TO THE SCUM, BUT HE FOUND THAT LIFE IN THE STREET WAS MORE TREACHEROUS THAN THE JUNGLES OF VIETNAM. "COMBAT SHOCK"! IT FOLLOWED HIM EVERYWHERE! "COMBAT SHOCK"! WAS IT A NIGHTMARE OR A REALITY? THE BATTLEFIELD MAY HAVE CHANGED, BUT THE WAR WAS STILL ON. "COMBAT SHOCK"! MORE ACTION THAN "RAMBO". MORE TERROR THAN "THE TERMINATOR". MORE GUT-WRENCHING VIOLENCE THAN "COMMANDO". "COMBAT SHOCK"! AN EXPLOSIVE FILM YOU'LL NEVER FORGET. "COMBAT SHOCK"! |
