Come Away with Me sold approximately twenty million copies worldwide and won eight awards at the Grammy Awards of 2003, including "Record of the Year", "Album of the Year", and "Song of the Year". The album was released on 26 February 2002, and had a slow rise up the charts, eventually gaining a Platinum certification from the RIAA on 22 August 2002. From there it gained a lot of steam, selling over seven million copies over the next year, and on 15 February 2005, was certified Diamond by the RIAA. The genre of this CD is often the subject of debate, especially within the vocal jazz community. Many artists hold that because Jones made few changes to the original melody and rhythm of the covered tracks such as "Turn Me On" and "The Nearness of You", and most of the songs on the album are sung straight (a musical term meaning on the beats of the music, not swung) that this album does not qualify to be classified as jazz. Another popular argument holds that the lack of swing (upbeat musical jazz) also disqualifies Come Away with Me as a jazz album. Instead it is often given the heading of "soft rock" or "mellow pop".
