Comit n (formally: Comit n de Dom nguez) is a small city in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is the seat of government of the municipality of the same name.


It is located near the border with Guatemala at 16.25 N 92.13 W. In 2003 the estimated population was 75,600 people.


The original name given by the Maya people is Bal n Can n ("Nine stars"). It was later changed to Comit n de las Flores. Comit n de Dom nguez is named after Dr. Belisario Dom nguez, who gave a memorable speech in the Congress against the dictator Victoriano Huerta for which it was murdered.

Comitan and neighbouring San Cristobal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez are in the State of Chiapas, a region east of Oaxaca and south of Villahermosa and which is, without question, Mexico’s most stunning scenic area; mostly wild and rugged, it is rich in indigenous life and culture.
Comitan de Dominguez (its full name, although most often referred to as just Comitan; "Koh-me-tan"), was first settled around 1527 by the Spanish, and is still largely undiscovered by most foreign visitors to Mexico's Chiapas region, who traditionally arrive and explore the region from San Cristobal de las Casas, 88km (55 miles) north of here.
Comitan's main plaza (also known as the Zocalo) is an attractive, multi-level mix of benches, trees and art sculptures; there is also a fountain on west side.

COMITAN, Chiapas –; Hundreds of doctors, nurses and other health care workers took to the streets of this southern Mexico city Wednesday to protest what they call unfair blame that has been heaped on them for a spike in infant deaths at a local hospital in December.
They marched through the streets of Comitan, near the Guatemalan border, shouting slogans blaming the government for not giving them enough resources to work with.
The local leader of the health workers union said the government-run hospital in Comitan had been sterilizing and reusing hypodermic needles for almost a year, due to a lack of supplies.
