House of Lescun

In 1462, the new king of France Louis XI detached the county of Comminges from the royal domain and gave it to his friend: Louis XI Louis XI the Prudent (French: Louis XI le Prudent) (July 3, 1423 - August 30, 1483), also informally nicknamed luniverselle aragne (old French for universal spider), was a King of France (1461 - 1483). ...

House of Aydie

At the death of Jean de Lescun in 1472, the county of Comminges passed to:

  • Odet d'Aydie (husband of Marie de Lescun, heiress of Lescun as daughter of Mathieu de Lescun, himself probably a cousin of Jean de Lescun) (born ca. 1425 - died 1498), Constable of France (supreme commander of the French army) and close advisor of Louis XI, count of Comminges (1472-1498)
  • In 1498, at the death of Odet d'Aydie, who did not have a son, King Louis XII of France definitely reunited the county of Comminges to the French crown. The descendants of Odet d'Aydie's daughter continued to carry the title of Count of Comminges until the French Revolution, but they were no more the rulers of an autonomous fief.

123VOYAGE South West France: Comminges (378 words)
Comminges was not truly annexed by France until 1540.
The town of Saint Gaudens replaced Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges as the main town in the area in the 17th century and in general the area was controlled from Auch (Gascony) and is now in the departement of Haute-Garonne, capital Toulouse.
Comminges rests in and around the valley of the Garonne, with spectacular mountain ranges to the South.
Couserans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (935 words)
In 1180, the viscounty of Couserans was created and given to Roger of Comminges, brother of Count Bernard IV of Comminges, thus separating Couserans from Comminges, and reverting to the Roman situation when there was a Civitas Consorannorum (Couserans) distinct from the Civitas Convenarum (Comminges).
When French départements were created in 1790, Couserans could have joined with Comminges to form a département, as history and geography suggested, but Saint-Girons and Saint-Gaudens (the largest town of Comminges) could not agree on which town would be the préfecture (capital).
At the initiative of a representative of Pamiers (largest town in the County of Foix), Couserans was joined with the province of County of Foix to form the Ariège département.
