Common Rider was a rock band, formed in 1999 by Jesse Michaels (guitar, vocals), Mass Giorgini (bass) and Dan Lumley (drums). The band toured the US extensively the same year, including the 2002 Plea For Peace tour, sponsored by Asian Man Records. On the tour, Phillip Hill (from Teen Idols and also a major contributor on the album This is Unity Music) and Joe Mizzi (from Metro, Detroit and also a guest vocalist on the album This Is Unity Music) played guitar for the band. Mass Giorgini (bass) recently (2005) went out to Australia to record an album for Brisbane-based reggae/ska outfit "Scarred Hope." The album is still being worked on by many of the same people who have done work on the Operation Ivy cover booklets, and will be available through "Freewave Records."


The band broke up in 2003, mainly because of the want to pursue other opportunities. Dan Lumley officially retired from music at that time as well. Mass still plays with Squirtgun. Unlike Big Rig, Common Rider was going to be a real band, which would do more than just release an EP and disappear.
Emphatically ending any debates of who put the ska into Operation Ivy's sound, Common Rider are closer in sound to the Wailers or the Skatalites than Minor Threat or Sham 69.
The hardest thing about listening to Common Rider is that, because of their roots, it is too easy to hear what they aren't, as opposed to what they are.

Common Rider is in the middle of their short set at this year's Charlotte, NC Plea For Peace stop.
During the ten year break between Op Ivy and Common Rider, he went through the obligatory soul searching of the typical 20something individual.
And on this night in Charlotte, beneath the lights, before the crowd, Common Rider kicks into "Small Pebble," and Michaels loses himself in the music--his home, where he belongs.
