Communist Party of Estonia (in Estonian: Eestimaa Kommunistlik Partei, in Russian: Kommunisticheskaya Partiya Estonii) was a political party in Estonia. It was in power during the Soviet occupation from 1941 until the first free election in 1990 when Edgar Savisaar, the leader of Popular Front became prime minister. The original EKP had a split in 1990, when members of pro-Soviet minority left and re-organized into Communist Party of Estonia (on the platform of CPSU). Pro-reform wing of EKP later changed its name (becoming Democratic Labour Party of Estonia) and changed its orientation becoming a democratic socialist party (now it is called the Left Party). The Communist Party was declared illegal after the failed coup of August 1991.
