Competencies represent certain clusters of skills, abilities and knowledges needed to perform certain jobs.
For instance, management competencies include:
Characteristics Specific Assignable to one or more roles Can group and combine to form higher competencies
Possession of a competence A person possesses a competence, as long as the skills abilities and knowledge that define that competence are a part of the person. Therefore one might not lose a skill, knowledge or ability, but could lose a competence if the defining factors of the competence change.

The notion of competence described above is a pale and demeaning shadow of the Greek notion of aretè or that of virtus in ancient Rome.
