A competitive examination is an examination where candidates are ranked according to their grades. If the examination is open for n positions, then the first n candidates in ranks pass, the others are rejected.


Competitive examinations are used in many countries for admissions to colleges or for positions in the civil service. They are considered an egalitarian way of choosing worthy applicants without risking influence peddling, favoritism or other concerns.

UN: 2002 COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR ENGLISH INTERPRETERS (1427 words)
A competitive examination for the recruitment of English Interpreters will be held on 9 and 10 January 2002 in New York, Geneva and other locations according to the number and location of qualified candidates invited to take the examination and the availability of necessary technical equipment.
