Compton's Most Wanted is a gangsta rap group still performing today on independent lables. Unknown DJ was never a member of Compton's Most Wanted, he was just going to take charge for C.M.W. Their first three albums (It's a Compton Thang, Straight Checkn 'Em and Music to Drive-By) were produced by DJ Slip and The Unknown DJ, who produced both electro funk tracks as well as Ice T's classic gangster rap "6 N The Morning". MC Chill was original member of C.M.W in their first album It's a Compton Thang, but he was sentenced to prison in 1991 (Before Straight Checkn 'Em was released) and got out in 1994. Because of that he missed C.M.W's two most popular albums Straight Checkn 'Em and Music To Drive-By, where they had popular songs like Hood Took Me Under, Def Wish and Straight Up Menace. After 3 years behind bars MC Chill didn't have chance to return to C.M.W because group had made break after Music To Drive-By album, so Chill started featuring in MC Ren and MC Eiht solo albums. In 2000, the group joined forces again and released "Represent". C.M.W are known especially for their slow, often melancholic raps, with slow beats and samples taken from soul and funk records from the seventies such as "Joy" by Isaac Hayes. Such hit songs as "It Was a Good Day" (Ice Cube), "Warning" (The Notorious B.I.G.), and "Sugar Hill" (AZ) took samples first used by C.M.W. Currently, MC Eiht is still pursuing his solo career, while DJ Slip is mainly working for the new west coast rap label IV Life Records [1] Additionally, CMW is set for a reunion which will feature on DJ Slip's next album "The Minority Report". TrouserPress.com :: Comptons Most Wanted (467 words)
Making their initial mark in 1989 with the singles "Rhymes Too Funky" and "This Is Compton," Comptons Most Wanted was one of the first crews to take advantage of N.W.A's gangsta breakthrough.
On CMW's subsequent single, "Growin' Up in the Hood," a moody Cleopatra Jones loop and a stark drum break serve as the backdrop for Eiht and Chill as they capture the hopeless desperation of the downbeat Boyz n the Hood, the film for which it was commissioned.
The criminal-minded (and Cypress Hill-quoting) "Run 4 Your Life" and the hostile "Fuc Em All" are especially potent; although the subject matter is similar, the lush "Late Nite Hype Part 2" tones down the delivery for a nearly seductive expression of violence.
