Compulsary Basic Training (CBT) is a basic training course for motorcylists in the United Kingdom. It is often taken as the first stage of gaining a full motorcycle license, but is not always a necessary requirement.
If you have a valid, full license granted before February 1, 2001, a CBT is not necessary to ride a scooter of cubic capacity of less than 50cc, but you must display "L" plates and you are not allowed to carry a pillion.
If you are over 21 years of age, then you can take the Direct Access course to gain a full motorcycle license without the CBT. In effect, the CBT is incorporated inside the Direct Access course.
Otherwise, you must take the CBT before you can legally drive any form of motorbike.
If you have taken the CBT successfully, then you are legally allowed to ride a scooter of up to 125cc for two years under "L" plate rules. You can then take a full motorcycle test to gain a full license.
