Encyclopedia > Compulsory Basic Training

Compulsary Basic Training (CBT) is a basic training course for motorcylists in the United Kingdom. It is often taken as the first stage of gaining a full motorcycle license, but is not always a necessary requirement.

The rules, as of September 2004 are as follows:

  • If you have a valid, full license granted before February 1, 2001, a CBT is not necessary to ride a scooter of cubic capacity of less than 50cc, but you must display "L" plates and you are not allowed to carry a pillion.
  • If you are over 21 years of age, then you can take the Direct Access course to gain a full motorcycle license without the CBT. In effect, the CBT is incorporated inside the Direct Access course.
  • Otherwise, you must take the CBT before you can legally drive any form of motorbike.

If you have taken the CBT successfully, then you are legally allowed to ride a scooter of up to 125cc for two years under "L" plate rules. You can then take a full motorcycle test to gain a full license.
