In this story Richard "Bingo" Little falls in love with the daughter of a left-wing, probably, communist or socialist leader called Charlotte Corday Rowbotham. (Bertie Wooster describes her as "well nourished".) In an attempt to get close to her, Little joins the group, called the Heralds of the Red Dawn, whose aims are to "massacre the bourgeoise, sack Park Lane and disembowel the hereditary aristocracy". This leads to an event where Bertie passes through Speakers' Corner where he meets Bingo's uncle, who was recently created Lord Bittlesham. Bingo, in an attempt to impress the members of the group and the girl, starts to berate his uncle and Bertie. However he is not recognised as he is wearing s beard. He speaks out as to how the Idle Rich are the worst of society. The next day he meets Bingo and he tells Bertie about his plan. He tells Bertie to expect his new "friends" for tea at his (Bertie's) apartment. Bingo then goes on to tell how his uncle has a horse "Ocean Breeze" that can't lose. He tells Bertie to back it, saying he'll do the same and then will be able to afford a wedding. When they arrive at Bertie's apartment, he is introduced to Mr.Rowbotham, who promptly asks "Are you part of our movement?" To which Wooster replies "The whole hub of the scheme seems to be to massacre coves like me. I'm not frightfully keen on the idea". Whe they begin eating Rowbotham asks for some tea from Jeeves, he answers yes sir, to which Rowbotham replies "You're an absolute relic of an exploded class system". The meal eventually ends, with Bertie expressing his joy at its ending. |
