In Macao, concelho was also the alternative name for a municipality, especially under the local administration system for the Overseas Provinces of Portugal before 1974. Upon the promulgation of the new legal regime governing municipalities of Macau in 1984, the concelhos were referred to as municípios, and the word concelho was rarely used since.
