Condesa is a neighborhood in the central borough of Cuauhtémoc in Mexico City. It is well known for its Art Deco architecture. It was developed at the turn of the 20th century (1902) in what was once the Condesa racetrack. The actual racetrack became a pair of concentrical elliptical steets called Amsterdam and Avenida México. The neighborhood got its name from the grounds of the old Hacienda of the Countess of Miravalle on which it was built. The hacienda's old house still exists as the Russian embassy in Mexico. History

The Condesa’s first residents were upper- and middle-class Mexicans and internationals. Agustín Lara, the great composer of romantic boleros, lived here, as did flamenco dancer Pilar Rioja, painter Juan Soriano, and popular-art collector and investigator Ruth D. Lechuga. In 1924, Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles opened Mexico to the largest wave of Jewish immigration in the country’s history. Since its first days this colonia has had very good infrastructure with its big parks and tree lined avenues. The two parks are known as Parque Mexico and Parque España, although the first one is officially named Parque José de San Martín. Some of the oldest apartment buildings in Mexico City, called "Edificios Condesa", are located in this neighbourhood. Their characteristic French neo-classic architecture speaks of their early-20ht Century origin. A group of locally known artists formed by sculptors, painters and actors (such as actress Susana Alexander) live there.

Condesa shows an interesting mixture of Art Deco houses, racionalist 20th Century modern structures and avant-garde contemporary buildings.


Today

Condesa neighborhood is considered to be one of the most progressively modern places in the city. It is a central hub where hipster culture, art, modernity, and free thought converge in a fresh atmosphere among lounges, martini bars, and sidewalk coffee houses.


It is one of the few places other than Polanco (in the north-western area of the city)or Colonia Roma (in the central area, and just beside Condesa) where Mexico City's true cosmopolitan, modern nature is on display. On weekdays, it's an oasis of beauty and calm, but on weekends its alter ego jolts to life as the boisterous beehive of Mexico's young, hip, and stylish move in. The action centers arround the cafes clustered around some streets like Michoacán, Atlixco or Vicente Suárez, but chic restaurants line Tamaulipas Avenue and groovy bars are popping up around Parque México. The boom in Mexican construction industry at the beginning of the 21st century has reached Condesa, which is being packed with contempo-minimal-styled apartment buildings and trendy lofts, built where old single-family houses used to be.


Condesa, with its small galleries and numerous alternative exhibit spaces, offers an important space for art. This neighborhood hosted a small part of the Mexico City Cow Parade from november 2005 to february 2006.
