As an infant, Apolinario wanted to become a priest. At the age ofr 24 in 1839 , he attempted to enter a monastic order in Manila. He was refused because he was a an 'indio' (native, indigent). Frustated, he worked in the San Juan de Dios Hospital. During his spare time, he studied the Bible and religous material and activley listended to church sermons thus developing his knowledge in theology. 1839 was a common year starting on Tuesday (see link for calendar). ... In June 1840, he founded the Cofradia de San Jose(Confraternity of St. Joseph) which excluded caucasians. The brotherhood fostered the practice of Christian virtues. When Spanish religous authorities heard about it, they immediately condemed the brotherhood as heresy. The brother hood grew despite persecution. Saint Joseph, also referred to as Joseph the Betrothed and as Joseph of Nazareth, was the foster-father of Jesus, according to the New Testament (Matthew 1:16; Luke 3:23). ...

Many of the uprisings in the 1600’s were led by local chiefs, primarily from Pampanga, Pangasinan, Ilocos, and Zambales, against the policy of reduction whereby a typical town was constructed around a church and a plaza and the people forced to live in and around it, making friar control easier and more absolute.
The leaders of the Confradia were jailed for a while and after release fled to Majayjay, Laguna.
The Confradia then marched to Alitao, at the foot of Mt. San Cristobal and built a fort against expected attacks from the Spaniards.
