In form, a cong is a tube with a circular inner section and squarish outer section. The outer surface is divided vertically or horizontally such that the whole defines a hollow cylinder embedded in a partial rectangular block. Proportions vary - a cong may be squat or taller than it is wide. The outer faces are sometimes decorated with masklike faces, which may be related to the taotie designs found on later bronze vessels.

Although generally considered to be a ritual object of some sort, the original function and meaning of the cong are unknown. Later writings speak of the the cong as symbolizing the earth, while the bi represents the heavens.

The appeal of jade to the ancient Chinese was due to its toughness, lustre, multiplicity of colors and the transformation it underwent when heated.
The burning of jades in pre-burial cremation ceremonies was essential for members of the ruling class in many areas and periods of ancient China.
Called "new jade", "Burma Jade" or "green jade", Jadeite has virtually no historical or cultural significance, but is the preferred jewelry jade of the modern Chinese (who emulate the West in so much of their current culture).
Jade (1838 words)
Jade often possessed not just symbolic but belief-system significance -- as seems the case with the mysterious bi discs and cong tubes found in Neolithic Chinese grave sites (the former are discs with a hole in the center, the latter a tube that, in section, is square on the outside and round on the inside).
Jade's spectrum of colors is the result of trace elements -- such as magnesium in green jade or iron in jades with a yellowish hue -- mixed in with the snowy white of the pure mineral.
Fewer jades survive from the centuries from the fall of the Han dynasty in 220 through the end of the Tang dynasty in 906 than from earlier or later dynasties.
