Conneaut (pronounced KAW-nee-ut) is a city located in Ashtabula County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,485.

History

The city of Conneaut is located on an old Native American trail, also used by early pioneers heading westward. The name of the city comes from its creek, Conneaut Creek, originally the Seneca's Konyiat, meaning "place of many fish" or "place where snow lies in spring."


Geography

Conneaut is located at 41°56'36" North, 80°34'10" West (41.943313, -80.569476)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 68.5 km˛ (26.4 mi˛). 68.3 km˛ (26.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,485 people, 5,038 households, and 3,410 families residing in the city. The population density is 182.8/km˛ (473.4/mi˛). There are 5,710 housing units at an average density of 83.6/km˛ (216.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.33% White, 1.12% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 5,038 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,717, and the median income for a family is $37,955. Males have a median income of $31,964 versus $21,198 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,703. 13.0% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
