Encyclopedia > Connecticut State Highway 15

Connecticut State Highway 15 (CT-15) is a highway in Connecticut that runs 83.53 miles long from a connection with the New York's Hutchinson River Parkway in southwestern Connecticut to its northern terminus intersecting with Interstate 84 in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Length and sections

From the New York border eastward to the Housatonic River, CT-15 is a landscaped limited-access highway known formally as the Merritt Parkway. East of the Housatonic, CT-15 remains a limited-access highway and becomes the Wilbur Cross Parkway, running in a northeasterly direction from Milford, Connecticut to Meriden. At Meriden, CT-15 becomes a limited-access road with stoplights that runs northward to Hartford and is known as the Berlin Turnpike. It becomes the Charter Oak Bridge at Hartford and terminates with an intersection with I-84 on the east bank of the Connecticut River in East Hartford.

Of note

CT-15's Merritt Parkway section was constructed from 1938 to 1940, and was designed to be both a fast-moving traffic conduit as well as a literally landscaped "park"-way. The majority of CT-15 in Fairfield County is lined with dense trees and crossed by bridges designed individually for each interchange. The Merritt also uses unique historical signage until it crosses the Housatonic, at which point it becomes the Wilbur Cross and regular signage is used. The Merritt is also called The Queen of all Parkways for its design and scenic beauty. Major intersections along CT-15's route include CT-8 near Shelton, CT-34 in Orange/Derby, and I-691 in Meriden.
